Why did Esther Rosenblatt Landa help co-found NCJW Utah?
With like-minded advocates, Frances Dolowitz and Corrine Sweet, Landa co-founded the Utah children’s educational program, HEADSTART.
Before 1940, Esther Rosenblatt Landa, a Utah women’s rights activist, understood the influence of the national headquarters of NCJW had on mentoring current and future leaders of local communities making a difference within their state.
The granddaughter of Polish Jewish immigrant Nathan Rosenblat, Esther Rosenblatt Landa cared deeply about public education, children’s welfare, family health, women’s rights, and human equality—and what NCJW Utah can do to help. She understood the need to support and increase NCJW Utah’s membership growth and visibility.
She passionately advocated leadership programs such as those held at the Washington Institute and right here in Salt Lake City. She emphasized the need to foster public policy activities, raise awareness, broaden community, help new immigrants and refugees, and provided NCJW Utah participation at the legislature.
And she knew most of this came with a price tag—traveling to conferences, attending training programs, and putting on informative programs that will impact the many rather than the few.
